The museum house nearly 10,000 artifacts. These include furniture, ceramics, glass, books, manuscripts, photographs, musical instruments, textiles, costumes, ethnographic materials, and stone and metal objects. Most of these objects relate to the history of Cheboygan County.

The smallest of our collections, our archives are comprised of records generated by several Cheboygan residents and organizations. Archival materials are those materials that are unpublished, are usually one of a kind, and are a result of a person's or organization's activities.

Populations served:
We serve the people of Cheboygan County and visitors to Cheboygan County. We also provide educational programming opportunities for the students of any Cheboygan County Schools.

Governing Body:
The museum is a non-profit entity organized under the laws of the State of Michigan. We are governed by an nine member volunteer board of directors. The museum's non-profit status is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service. We are tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Funding Sources:
A combination of earned income, admissions, memberships, individual and corporate contributions constitutes our annual operating budget of approximately $30,000-$40,000.

The first formal meeting of the Cheboygan Area Historical Society was held on May 6, 1969, and on July 22, 1969 officers were elected and a charter accepted. In the following two years, a number of important events occured that solifified the presence of the organization in the community. First, an agreement with the City of Cheboygan was reached that allowed the Society to use the old Cheboygan County Jail at the corner of Huron and Court Streets; second, the organization incorporated as a non-profit entity and, third, the name was changed to The Historical Society of Cheboygan County, Inc. In 2010, as a result of a museum assessment program conducted by the American Alliance of Museums, the Historical Society began doing business as The Cheboygan County History Center. On July 17, 2014, the corporate name was changed to The History Center of Cheboygan County, Inc.
